The Short Answer
The Canadian Tire Triangle World Elite Mastercard earns the most at Canadian Tire — 4% in CT Money on all Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, and affiliate purchases, plus up to 10¢/L at Gas+ and Husky stations. It has no annual fee.
If you prefer flexibility and cash back redeemable anywhere, a flat-rate or tiered cash back card paired with your Triangle loyalty account (for dual earning) is a strong alternative.

The Triangle Cards: Co-Branded Canadian Tire Cards
Canadian Tire Triangle World Elite Mastercard
The flagship Canadian Tire card earns:
- 4% in CT Money on purchases at Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Mark’s, Party City, L’Équipeur, and other Triangle partner stores
- Up to 10¢/L in CT Money at Gas+ and Husky stations (tiered by monthly fuel volume)
- 1.5% in CT Money on groceries (excluding Walmart and Costco)
- 0.5% in CT Money on all other purchases
Annual fee: $0
Income requirement: $80,000 individual or $150,000 household
At $200/month in Canadian Tire spending, you’d earn $96/year in CT Money — entirely at no cost.
Canadian Tire Triangle Mastercard
The no-income-requirement version of the Triangle card:
- 1.5% in CT Money on Canadian Tire and partner store purchases
- 5¢/L in CT Money at Gas+ and Husky stations
- 0.5% in CT Money everywhere else
Annual fee: $0
No income requirement
The Triangle Mastercard is the fallback for applicants who don’t meet the World Elite income threshold ($80K/year). It earns a lower rate (1.5% vs. 4% in-store), but still more than a generic flat-rate card if you shop regularly at Canadian Tire.
The Dual Earning Strategy: Any Card + Triangle Loyalty
You do not have to use a Triangle Mastercard to earn CT Money. Canadian Tire runs a separate loyalty programme — you can earn CT Money with virtually any payment method by scanning your Triangle account before paying.
Example: Pay with Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard → earn 1.5% cash back → scan your Triangle card → also earn CT Money on the same transaction.
This dual-earning approach is most valuable when your existing credit card earns more than 1.5% elsewhere (e.g., MBNA Smart Cash earns 5% on groceries and gas — you’d lose that rate by switching everything to the Triangle card for the 0.5% non-bonus earn).
Recommended setup:
- Use the Triangle World Elite for purchases at Canadian Tire stores and Gas+/Husky
- Use your best everyday card (Rogers Red, Tangerine, MBNA Smart Cash) for everything else
- Always scan your Triangle account regardless of which card you pay with
CT Money: Is It Worth It?
CT Money redeems at $1 CT Money = $1 at Canadian Tire family stores. It is not transferable to cash, other loyalty programmes, or non-CT retailers.
| Earn Rate | Effective Value | Annual Earn on $200/month CT Spend |
|---|---|---|
| 4% CT Money (Triangle World Elite) | 4 cents per dollar | $96 |
| 1.5% CT Money (Triangle Mastercard) | 1.5 cents per dollar | $36 |
| 1.5% cash back (Rogers Red, Quicksilver) | 1.5 cents per dollar anywhere | $36 |
| 2% cash back (Tangerine — home improvement) | 2 cents per dollar anywhere | $48 |
The Triangle World Elite’s 4% is the clear winner for Canadian Tire spending — as long as you actually shop enough at CT stores to redeem the CT Money you accumulate. If you rarely return to Canadian Tire, that unspent CT Money has no value outside the CT ecosystem.
What Canadian Tire Sells (and What Cards Work Best by Category)
| Category at Canadian Tire | Best Card to Use |
|---|---|
| General CT merchandise (tools, home, auto) | Triangle World Elite (4%) |
| Fuel at Gas+ / Husky | Triangle World Elite (10¢/L) |
| Sporting goods at Sport Chek | Triangle World Elite (4%) |
| Groceries (Mark’s / affiliated stores) | Triangle World Elite (1.5%) |
| Online Canadian Tire purchases | Triangle World Elite (4%) |
| Canadian Tire purchases on a non-CT card | Rogers Red or Quicksilver (1.5%) + Triangle scan |
Canadian Tire Accepts All Major Networks
Unlike Costco Canada (Mastercard only), Canadian Tire accepts Visa, Mastercard, and American Express in-store and online. This means you’re not restricted to a Mastercard if you prefer Visa or Amex.
However, the Triangle co-branded cards are Mastercard only — so the highest CT-specific earn rate (4%) requires a Mastercard.
