AIR MILES — Canadian Credit Card Glossary

Updated

AIR MILES

AIR MILES is Canada’s largest coalition loyalty programme, operated by the AIR MILES Reward Program (owned by Loyalty Ventures). Members earn miles by shopping at a network of over 200 sponsor partners — including grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies, and home improvement retailers — without needing to fly anywhere to accumulate miles. This makes AIR MILES particularly accessible for everyday Canadians who may not travel frequently.

The programme operates two separate “currencies” that serve different redemption goals. Cash Miles function like cash and can be used to offset purchases at participating retailers at a rate of approximately 1¢ per mile. Dream Miles are used for travel rewards including flights, hotel stays, and vacation packages, with a variable redemption value depending on the booking.

Canadian Context

AIR MILES is a distinctly Canadian institution with no direct US equivalent. Unlike Aeroplan or Avion Rewards which are tied to a single airline or bank, AIR MILES is a broad coalition programme spanning grocery, gas, and retail — making it easier for non-travellers to accumulate rewards through everyday spending. The programme had controversy with a short-lived expiry policy in 2016–2017 that was ultimately cancelled following public backlash; miles collected since then do not expire. BMO is the primary credit card partner for earning AIR MILES in Canada.
