Amex Membership Rewards (MR)
American Express Membership Rewards (MR) is Amex’s proprietary, transferable points programme available to Canadian cardholders on eligible Amex credit cards. MR points are considered one of the most flexible loyalty currencies in Canada because they can be transferred to multiple airline partners, used to pay for travel through the Amex Travel portal, converted to statement credits, or redeemed for gift cards and merchandise.
The highest value — and the reason travel enthusiasts favour MR — comes from transferring points to airline partners at a 1:1 ratio and booking premium cabin award flights. A business class redemption using Aeroplan or British Airways Avios transferred from MR can yield 5¢ or more per point, far exceeding the portal rate.

Canadian Context
Canadian Amex Membership Rewards is separate from the US programme — Canadian MR points cannot be transferred to US-only partners and vice versa. However, the Canadian programme still offers excellent airline transfer partners, with Aeroplan (1:1) being particularly valuable for Canadian travellers. The Amex Cobalt Card is widely regarded as one of the best everyday earning cards in Canada, with 5x MR points on food and beverage purchases. Amex’s acceptance in Canada is more limited than in the US — some retailers and smaller businesses do not accept Amex — which is worth considering before committing to an Amex-primary strategy.
