Aeroplan Elite Status: Is It Worth It? Canada 2026

Updated

Aeroplan Elite Status rewards Air Canada’s most loyal flyers with a suite of travel perks — priority check-in, free upgrades, lounge access, and bonus point earning. But qualifying isn’t easy, and the benefits don’t suit everyone. This guide breaks down every Aeroplan Elite Status tier, what it takes to earn status, and whether the pursuit is worth your time and money.

What Is Aeroplan Elite Status?

Aeroplan Elite Status is Air Canada’s frequent flyer tier program. Members earn status by accumulating Status Qualifying Miles (SQM), Status Qualifying Segments (SQS), and/or Status Qualifying Dollars (SQD) during a calendar year.

There are four Elite Status tiers:

TierStatus Qualifying MilesCommon Nickname
25K Elite25,000 SQM / 35 SQSSilver
35K Elite35,000 SQM / 45 SQSGold
50K Elite50,000 SQM / 60 SQSPlatinum
75K Elite75,000 SQM / 100 SQSSuper Elite

Status is earned in one calendar year and applies for the following calendar year. For example, status earned between January and December 2026 is valid for all of 2027.

How to Earn Status Qualifying Miles

Status Qualifying Miles are different from regular Aeroplan points. You earn SQM specifically on Air Canada and select partner flights — they are not earned on credit card spending.

Key SQM rules:

  • SQM are earned on Air Canada and Air Canada Express operated flights
  • Select Star Alliance flights also earn SQM (with limitations)
  • SQM are calculated based on distance flown and fare class
  • Higher fare classes (flexible economy, premium economy, business, first) earn more SQM per kilometre

Status Qualifying Segments count individual flight legs. Frequent short-haul flyers often find it easier to meet segment requirements than mileage requirements.

Status Qualifying Dollars (SQD)

Introduced to prevent mileage runs on low-cost fares, Air Canada also tracks Status Qualifying Dollars — the amount you spend on Air Canada tickets. Some tier thresholds require both SQM and SQD minimums to be met.

This change means that booking ultra-cheap basic economy fares to accumulate SQM is less effective than it once was — you also need to spend a minimum dollar amount. Check Air Canada’s current SQD requirements before planning any status run.

How Credit Cards Help With Elite Status

Aeroplan credit cards don’t directly earn SQM — but the Amex Aeroplan Reserve Card includes a Status Accelerator benefit that provides bonus SQM when you spend on the card. This can materially shorten the path to 25K or 35K status.

Additionally, several premium Aeroplan cards include:

  • eUpgrade credits upon card renewal or first purchase (useful once you have 25K+ status)
  • Status matches or fast-track offers periodically available through TD or CIBC

Is Aeroplan Elite Status Worth Pursuing?

It’s worth it if you:

  • Fly Air Canada 8+ times per year and the routes you need are primarily served by Air Canada
  • Want reliable upgrades and lounge access on business trips
  • Already earn Aeroplan points and want to compound the value with status bonuses
  • Travel frequently enough that priority services (check-in, boarding, baggage) save real time

It’s probably not worth it if you:

  • Fly multiple airlines or book primarily on WestJet or international carriers
  • Travel fewer than 6–8 times per year on Air Canada
  • Would need to take deliberate “mileage runs” (trips booked purely to earn SQM) — this is rarely cost-effective
  • Are satisfied with credit card travel perks like lounge access via your card’s included memberships

The honest math

Reaching 25K Elite requires roughly 10–15 Air Canada flights, depending on routes and fare classes. If you’re naturally reaching that flight count, the benefits — particularly the 25% point bonus and priority boarding — are valuable at no extra cost.

If you’re considering flying specifically to hit a threshold, calculate whether the upgrade certainty and lounge access are worth the incremental flight costs. For most Canadians, the answer is no.

Maintaining and Renewing Elite Status

Elite Status must be re-earned each calendar year. Air Canada does not grandfather status indefinitely.

Tips for status retention:

  • Focus Air Canada flying in Q4 (October–December) if you’re close to a threshold
  • Use eUpgrade credits before year-end — they expire if status is not renewed
  • Monitor your SQM, SQS, and SQD totals in your Aeroplan account dashboard

Air Canada occasionally offers status extensions or promotions during exceptional circumstances (e.g., 2020–2021 pandemic accommodations), but these should not be relied upon.

Aeroplan Elite Status FAQ

Does Aeroplan Elite Status give you free flights? No. Elite Status earns bonus Aeroplan points and perks like priority and lounge access — but not free flights. You can use accumulated Aeroplan points (including status bonuses) to redeem for flights.

Can I earn Aeroplan Elite Status with credit card spending? Not directly. SQM are earned only on qualifying flights. However, the Amex Aeroplan Reserve Card provides a Status Accelerator benefit that awards bonus SQM based on card spending, which can help you reach a threshold faster.

Does Air Canada match status from other airlines? Air Canada periodically offers status match promotions, typically from Star Alliance partner airlines. These are not permanent features — watch for offers on the Air Canada website or through Aeroplan email communications.

What happens to my eUpgrade credits if I don’t renew status? Unused eUpgrade credits expire when your Elite Status expires. Use them before December 31 each year.

Is 25K Elite worth it over no status? For most regular Air Canada travellers (8+ flights per year), yes. The priority boarding, one free checked bag, and 25% bonus point earning add genuine value. The break-even point is roughly 6–8 annual Air Canada flights.
