Every AIR MILES mile you earn is split between two buckets: Cash Miles and Dream Miles. Understanding the difference — and choosing the right split — determines how much value you actually extract from the programme.
What Are Cash Miles?
Cash Miles are redeemed at the checkout of participating AIR MILES partners for instant discounts:
- 95 Cash Miles = $10 off your purchase (at Sobeys, Shell, Rexall, and other partners)
- Works like a gift card applied at checkout — immediate, simple
- No minimum redemption threshold
- No travel booking required
Effective cash value: 95 Cash Miles → $10 = ~$0.105 per Cash Mile
What Are Dream Miles?
Dream Miles are redeemed for flights, hotels, car rentals, merchandise, and experiences through the AIR MILES Dream catalogue:
- Flights (mostly WestJet and Air Canada): variable miles cost
- Hotels and car rentals through AIR MILES
- Entertainment experiences, merchandise, gift cards
Dream Mile value: Typically $0.08–$0.15 per Dream Mile depending on redemption. Flight redemptions at good availability offer the best value. Merchandise is usually poor value.
Value Comparison
| Redemption | Value per Mile |
|---|---|
| Cash Miles at checkout ($10 / 95 miles) | ~10.5¢ |
| Dream Miles — short-haul domestic flight | ~8–12¢ |
| Dream Miles — merchandise/gift cards | ~5–8¢ |
| Dream Miles — experiences (premium) | ~10–15¢ |
Cash Miles are remarkably competitive — at ~10.5¢ per mile, they often match or beat Dream Miles for typical redemptions, with zero booking friction.
How the Split Works
By default, each mile you earn is split 50% Cash / 50% Dream. You can change this allocation in your AIR MILES account to:
- 100% Cash Miles — maximum checkout flexibility
- 100% Dream Miles — maximum travel/merchandise potential
- Any split in between
Which Should You Choose?
Choose mostly Cash Miles if:
- You shop regularly at Sobeys, Shell, or other partners and want simple grocery/gas discounts
- You don’t travel often and won’t realistically redeem for flights
- You want predictable, immediate value
- Your balance is under 1,500 miles and you can’t reach a meaningful flight threshold
Choose mostly Dream Miles if:
- You regularly fly and can reach flight redemption thresholds
- You hold the BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard (25% flight discount makes Dream Miles more valuable)
- You’re accumulating for a specific trip
- Your household earns miles quickly (2,000+ miles/year) through partners and credit cards
The BMO World Elite 25% Discount Changes the Math
The BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard gives a 25% discount on flight redemptions using Dream Miles. This effectively makes Dream Miles worth ~33% more for flights:
- Standard flight: 2,000 Dream Miles
- With BMO World Elite: 1,500 Dream Miles
If you hold this card, Dream Miles become significantly more attractive than Cash Miles for frequent flyers.
