Best Amex Membership Rewards Redemptions Canada 2026

Updated

Amex Membership Rewards points have one of the highest potential values of any Canadian loyalty currency — but only if you use them correctly. The difference between the best and worst redemptions is enormous: the same 100,000 MR points can be worth $670 as a statement credit or up to $5,000 via a well-executed Aeroplan business class booking.

Here are the best MR redemptions available to Canadians, ranked by value.

Redemption #1: Aeroplan → Star Alliance Business Class

Value: 3–5 cents per MR point | Transfer ratio: 1:1

The Aeroplan transfer is the most-used MR redemption strategy in Canada, and for good reason. Aeroplan is the Star Alliance programme, giving access to 26+ member airlines. Business class award rates on Aeroplan are among the most competitive in the world for Star Alliance flights.

Best Aeroplan business class targets from Canada:

RoutePartner CarrierAeroplan Points (one-way, business)Cash fare (approx.)
Toronto → FrankfurtLufthansa~55,000$4,000–$6,000
Toronto → TokyoANA~75,000$7,000–$12,000
Vancouver → TokyoANA~60,000$6,000–$10,000
Toronto → ZurichSWISS~55,000$4,500–$6,000
Canada → SingaporeSingapore Airlines~75,000$8,000–$14,000

Award pricing is approximate and subject to change. Verify at aeroplan.com before transferring.

How it works:

  1. Earn 5x MR on Cobalt (dining, groceries)
  2. Transfer to Aeroplan at 1:1 when ready to book
  3. Book the Aeroplan award at aeroplan.com
  4. Fly business class for a fraction of the cash price

Redemption #2: British Airways Avios → Qatar Qsuites

Value: 3–5 cents per MR point | Transfer ratio: 1:1

British Airways Avios can book Qatar Airways flights, including Qsuites — the highest-rated business class product in the world. MR transfers to Avios at 1:1, then Avios book Qsuites.

Sample pricing (one-way business, North America → Doha):

  • ~75,000–85,000 Avios + taxes/carrier charges
  • Cash equivalent: $8,000–$15,000

Redemption #3: British Airways Avios → Short-Haul Oneworld Flights

Value: 1.5–2.5 cents per MR point

Avios prices short-haul flights on partner carriers by distance — as few as 6,000 Avios for a sub-650-mile flight. MR transferred to Avios can book these short-haul awards at excellent value.

Best for: Add-on flights within the US or Europe during an international trip; American Airlines domestic short-hauls; Aer Lingus within Ireland and UK.

Redemption #4: Air France/KLM Flying Blue Monthly Promos

Value: 1.5–3 cents per MR point | Transfer ratio: 1:1

Flying Blue releases discounted Monthly Promo Awards each month — usually 25–50% off specific routes. When a transatlantic business class route goes on promo, the math is compelling.

Example: Business class Paris → Toronto typically costs ~60,000 Flying Blue Miles. At 50% promo, that drops to 30,000 points — all transferable from Amex MR at 1:1.

Check flyingblue.com on the first of each month for new promos.

Redemption #5: Amex Travel Portal

Value: ~1.0–1.1 cents per MR point

The Amex travel portal lets you book any flight, hotel, or car rental using MR points at a consistent rate. No award expertise required, no blackout dates. This is the simplest redemption and the floor value you should accept for MR points.

Best for: Economy flights, domestic travel, hotels where award space is irrelevant.

Redemptions to Avoid

RedemptionValue/Pointvs. Travel PortalNotes
Statement credits~0.67¢−33%Worst option with upcoming travel
Gift cards~0.7–0.8¢−20%Some slight variation; still poor
Merchandise~0.5–0.7¢−30–50%Never do this
Hilton Honors transfer~0.5¢−50%Hilton points are not valuable enough to justify

Amex allows statement credits and merchandise redemptions, but they represent a significant loss of points value. The only time these might be acceptable is if you have a very small remaining balance with no travel plans.

MR Redemption Decision Framework

  1. Do you have a premium cabin trip planned in the next 12 months?

    • Yes → Transfer to Aeroplan (Star Alliance) or Avios (Oneworld) → book that award
    • No → Hold points in MR until you do
  2. Is the route served by Star Alliance or Oneworld?

    • Star Alliance → Transfer to Aeroplan
    • Oneworld → Transfer to Avios (Qsuites, short-haul) or Asia Miles (Cathay)
    • Either → Consider Flying Blue if there’s a monthly promo
  3. Is award space available before you transfer?

    • Always check availability first — MR-to-airline transfers are one-way, non-reversible
  4. No travel plans at all?

    • Use the Amex travel portal (1.0¢/pt) for any upcoming flights or hotels rather than letting points sit unused for years
