Scene+ Points Expiry Rules Canada 2026

Scene+ points are protected from expiry as long as your account remains active — but if you let an account sit completely idle for two years, you risk losing your entire balance. The rules are straightforward and easy to work around once you understand them.


Do Scene+ Points Expire?

Yes. Scene+ points expire after 24 months of account inactivity. If your account has zero qualifying transactions (earning or redeeming) over any consecutive 24-month period, your entire Scene+ balance is forfeited.

The 24-month inactivity window is more generous than Aeroplan’s 18-month policy, giving Scene+ members more time between active periods before expiry becomes a risk.

Key rule: Points do not expire on a rolling per-transaction basis. You don’t need to use specific points within a window. A single qualifying activity — even a small one — resets the expiry clock for your entire balance.


What Counts as Qualifying Activity?

Any of the following resets the 24-month inactivity clock:

Earning Activity

  • Making a purchase with a Scotiabank Scene+ credit card (any amount)
  • Scanning your Scene+ card at a Sobeys-banner store, Cineplex, or Home Hardware
  • Receiving a bonus point promotion or referral award
  • Earning Scene+ points through a Scotiabank banking promotion

Redemption Activity

  • Redeeming Scene+ points for groceries at Sobeys
  • Redeeming points through Scene+ Travel for flights or hotels
  • Redeeming for Cineplex tickets or experiences
  • Applying a statement credit to your Scotiabank account

What Does NOT Reset the Clock

  • Simply having a Scene+ account with a positive balance
  • Receiving Scene+ marketing emails or newsletters
  • Logging into the Scene+ app or website without completing a transaction
  • Holding a Scotiabank Scene+ credit card that is not being used

The Easiest Ways to Keep Scene+ Points Active

If you have a dormant Scene+ account approaching the 24-month mark, any of the following will reset the clock — most take under five minutes:

1. Make a small purchase with your Scotiabank Scene+ credit card

Any transaction on a Scotiabank Scene+ credit card earns points and resets the expiry window. A $5 coffee purchase is enough.

2. Shop at a Sobeys-banner store

Pop into a Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, or FreshCo and scan your Scene+ card at checkout — even on a small purchase. The points earned reset the clock immediately.

3. Redeem a small number of points

Redeeming Scene+ points (even a small amount) counts as qualifying activity. A partial grocery redemption of 500 points ($5 off) resets the window for your entire balance.

4. Buy a Cineplex ticket

Scan your Scene+ card or use your Scene+ account at Cineplex. The earned points count as qualifying activity.

Scene+ gives members more breathing room than Aeroplan. However, the fundamental risk is the same: a completely dormant account over the inactivity period loses its entire balance.


Tracking Your Expiry Date

Check your Scene+ account activity status by:

  1. Logging into your account at sceneplus.ca or through the Scotiabank app
  2. Reviewing your recent earn and redemption history
  3. Noting the date of your last qualifying transaction

Scene+ may send email notifications before expiry — ensure your email address is current and that Scene+ communications are not going to your spam folder.
